 I never heard the word "cursive" growing up, but now it is quite common as handwriting and penmanship die out. According to the OED, the word was first used in English in the late 1700s, referring to a few examples of ancient writing. It is the practice of the OED to give at least one example from every century of each word. They list no examples from the twentieth century.

versus becomes verse

 Versus becomes verse. Have you noticed that all the cool kids these days say " verse " instead of " versus ," and lawyers like to say, " V ," as if it's their best friend  or  something, which I guess, when you come to think of it, it really is. Ha, lawyers' best friend is  Versus , which is abbreviated  vs ., and is pronounced  verse  by most people, but affectionately "Vee" in legal circles.  golden material for my funny novel, if I ever start to write it.
